Music & You In-School Youth Education

Music & You
In-School Youth Education

For over a decade Bob Lappin and the Palm Beach Pops have been providing quality music appreciation education at no cost to the Palm Beach County School System.  Over 54,000 largely Title One elementary school children have learned the rudiments of music: melody, rhythm and harmony, via live in-school instruction presented by the Music Man Lanny Smish and the four sections of the orchestra. Content is then tied back to math, reading, science, social studies and geography.

Palm Beach Pops is proud of its partnership with the Sun-Sentinel in the Music & You In-School Youth Education Program.

The activities in the program were designed to accompany the FCAT certified student booklet “Music and You”, and to enhance teaching of music in the classroom environment. Activities were written by the Sun-Sentinel NIE staff and an elementary teacher, with the final approval of the Palm Beach County Music and Arts Education Department.

Tickets for Children and Families Program

The Tickets for Children & Families Program is a special extension of The Palm Beach Pops’ In-School Youth Education Program.Through the generosity of Founders Joan and Allen Bildner and other generous benefactors, promising students who complete one of the two four-week in-school series, maintain above-average grades and demonstrate a commitment to music, receive free tickets to a Palm Beach Pops concert. In turn, they and their families have an opportunity to experience together a live, orchestral performance.

This valuable program clearly encourages young people to take an interest in music while being exposed to the positive messages conveyed by the American Songbook.

Florida Stars

Florida Stars

The Florida Stars program provides opportunities for gifted local students to perform with the Pops, before a live audience, thus ensuring the perpetuation of a pool of talented young performers from the local area.

Each season, Maestro Lappin searches for and auditions talented local students, ages 6-18, and offers them the opportunity to perform with the orchestra during a concert.

Bob Lappin and the Palm Beach Pops accepts applicants for this program year round. Anyone interested in submitting a South Florida youngster between the ages of 6-18 for consideration should send a biography, photo and recent sample of their music along with contact information for the child to The Palm Beach Pops, ATTN: Florida Stars, 500 Australian Avenue South, Suite 100, West Palm Beach, Florida 33401. Materials received will not be returned. Materials and letters of recommendation must be submitted by a music professional or community leader.
